Design Dilemma: Choosing the right Rug Size and Style

Choosing the right rug

One of the most notorious design dilemmas our customers face is choosing the right rug for their space. Rugs are an amazing warm and fluffy way to add visual intrigue to any space. They are also expensive and large, and it’s easy to imagine yourself shelling out hundreds (if not thousands!) of dollars only to find you’ve purchased something that turns your room from “hot” to “not.”

A solution for this could be to go out and buy all the rugs you’ve got your eye on, bring them home, and try them out one-by-one in your living room. But if you’re like us and you don’t have endless amounts of money, a pickup truck, and all that time/muscle at your disposal, this isn’t a realistic option.

So here’s the good part. At Modsy we’ve created some amazing technology that lets you try on all the rugs you want, in your living room, without any of that hassle. Along with that, we’ve created this handy-dandy visual guide to help you learn how to pick the right rug for your space.

…The Blank Canvas

Choosing the right rug

Design Dilemma #1: Rug Style

Our eclectic minimal living room is looking a little bare without a rug underfoot. We picked three options that we love and they all seemed to match our style. Here’s what happened when we took them for a test drive:

Choosing the right rug

Moral of the story:

  • With a more eclectic styled living room, all that pattern from Rug #1 feels overwhelming and busy.
  • At the opposite end of the spectrum, Rug #2 didn’t have enough going on and it made the space feel sparse.
  • Rug #3 is our “Goldilocks” – that sweet spot in between that is simple enough not make the space feel overwhelming but also adds enough texture to spice up our living room.

Design Dilemma #2: Rug Size

Ok now that we know what rug we like, let’s try on some different sizes:

Choosing the right rug

Moral of the story:

  • A larger rug (we used a 9’x12’) bleeds out past the furniture and overwhelms the space. Having the sofa all the way on the rug, while the chairs dance on and off makes the space visually cluttered and confusing.
  • The small rug (we used a 3’x5’) gives us a tiny focal point in the middle of the room, and leaves the rest of the space feeling bare.
  • The middle size (for us, a 8’x10’) is just right. The front two legs of all the furniture are on the rug, creating an intimate “zoned” area in the middle of the room.

Of course, this guide doesn’t cover every possible rug dilemma out there. But don’t panic, Modsy is always here to help you move through your design paralysis and help you create a home you love.

The Naturalist’s Interior: Designing a Minimal Bohemian Living Room

Naturalist Living Room Collection

Warm, calming, and eclectic, this living room is the naturalist retreat you’ve been searching for. Come lounge around on a patterned dhurrie settee or plop down on the floor with some pillows; this space is for those of you looking for a way to satisfy your minimal and bohemian cravings.

Get the Minimal Bohemian Look:

Neutral Color Palette:

Lay the foundation of your naturalist abode with a neutral color palette. Opt for whites, beiges, and browns to create a warm and calming space.

  • We started with a coat of Decorator’s White (Benjamin Moore) to let the unique architecture of our space shine.

Natural Materials:

Incorporate natural materials to enhance your living room’s naturalist vibe. Choose pieces that use raw or unfinished materials like jute, rattan, wood, leather, stone, or shell.

Naturalist Living Room Collection

Play with Texture & Pattern:

Amp up the bohemian feel by incorporating texture and pattern. Playing with these elements will give your living room that essential eclectic charm.

  • Bring a welcome pop of pattern to your space with the Bridal Rug Settee (Wisteria). We also love the honeycomb pattern and translucent glow of Serena & Lily’s Capiz Honeycomb Chandelier made with real capiz shells.

Naturalist Living Room Collection

Naturalist Living Room Collection

Add some Natural Curiosities:

The secret sauce of this space is its perfect balance between the romantic and scientific elements. Equally charming and intriguing, these few details are essential for nailing the naturalist look.

  • We included an homage to one of the most influential naturalists, the larger than life John Muir Tribute Tree artwork (Natural Curiosities). Add a touch of natural whimsy with sculptures and small objects, like our Floating Marble Ducks (Wisteria).

Naturalist Living Room Collection

We love the idea of bringing the great outdoors into your home. As American writer, Genevieve Valentine writes, “Nature provides enough order to soothe and enough entropy to surprise,” making it the perfect interior design muse. So, if you love the boho look but not all the color, or if you like minimal spaces but find them chilly, our Naturalist collection is the “neutral territory” you’ve been seeking.

Boho Glam Wonderland: Give Your Hollywood Glam Living Room a Bohemian Twist

Have you ever walked into a room and wanted to touch everything? That’s how we feel about this India Mahdavi-worthy living room, that’s full of luscious textures, earthy colors, and sumptuous materials. The result is a boho glam wonderland!

Boho Glam Living Room

Check out the shopping list below, with 100% real (and affordable) products and take a peek at our cheat sheet to learn how to get the look.

How you can get the boho glam look:

space_5257_design_1_modcam_vertical_000_002-copy

  • Start with materials: The key to this look is the combination of organic and luxurious materials. Soft leather, stone, sheepskin, velvet, and shiny gold are your friends.

  • Make an understated statement: Nix the frills of Hollywood Glam and say “no thanks” to button tufting, sparkles, and exaggerated patterns. Instead, let the materials shine by choosing pieces with sleek forms.

Boho Glam Living Room

  • Add natural textures: Emphasize the bohemian element of your space with textures that showcase nature. We love the Sandstone Pattern wall art from Williams Sonoma, and have our eye fixed on the watery surface of the Ripple Media Console (CB2).

  • Curate an earthy color palette: If you can’t find it in nature, you won’t find it in this living room (looking at you hot pink!). We started with a base of charcoal and stoney greys and then layered in earthy hues. Think jewel tones, and seek out those saturated colors that will give your space a bohemian edge.

Boho Glam Living Room

  • Top it off with some whimsy: Create a playful space with whimsical accessories. Look for artwork that is a bit tongue-in-cheek for some great conversation pieces (as if this living room isn’t enough already).
    • We love the playful look of Anthropologie’s Ibex Side Table, and got a good laugh out of Alex Kostinskyi’s Knuba print (Artfully Walls).

Voila! Your living room is now the perfect balance of bohemian, glamorous, and minimal – oh my!

A Hygge Hideaway

Step inside our cozy hygge hideaway, and you can immediately smell the cookies baking and hear the crackle of the fire. Piles of pillows abound, plush comfy furniture offers itself as a cozy seat for snuggling up, and the floor is covered in layers of rugs and even more pillows. Harsh overhead lighting is forgone in lieu of glowing candles and twinkling string lights, and tranquil scenes of pastures and cottages hang on the walls. A gathering space for friends and family, we designed this room with the Danish concept of hygge as our inspiration.

We decided to show, rather than tell, what hygge is, and we also wanted to leave space for the concept to explain itself. Here’s hygge, in its own words….

Imagine if every time you walked into your living room it gave you a big hug. A hug that also swaddled you in chunky knit blankets with real, live puppies and placed a steamy cup of hot cocoa in your hands. That’s me, Hygge, and it’s oh so lovely to meet you!

“Who in the world is hygge?” you might be asking. That’s one of my favorite questions! (Oh, and I pronounce it “HOO-guh”) I’m not a person, I’m not a place, and I’m not really a thing either. I’m also not super flattered by being called a “lifestyle trend,” because I really hope you keep me around longer than your juice cleanse or your obsession with Pokemon Go.

I like to fancy myself more of a way of being, or a mindset of coziness that permeates Danish culture. I’ve been around for quite some time now, but it is only recently that I became so popular in the US (although the notion of ‘popularity’ isn’t high on my priority list, because I want to be everyone’s friend). I prefer slowing down, savoring the moment, and promoting a sense of well-being and connection. Ahhh… I’m feeling all warm and fuzzy just talking about it!

In case the next question percolating in your beautiful brain is “Where did you come from?” I have an answer for you! I am the proud descendant of the 16th century Norwegian term “hugga,” which means to comfort, or to console. Kind of similar to your English word “hug.” How wonderful!

Leaving behind some pointers to give us guidance, Hygge is happy to inhabit any home upon invitation. Peep the checklist below to learn how to invite Hygge into your space!

Hygge Home Checklist:

  • Warmth and light – Turn off the overhead lights, light a fire in the fireplace, string up some lights, and top it off with some lovely candles.
  • Get cozy and fuzzy – layered rugs, pillows galore (even on the floor), and blankets for days are my favorite tricks for adding a dose of coziness to any space. I especially love plush rugs and all things sheepskin!
  • Keep it neutral and natural – I’m not neutral when it comes to my stance on color palette. I love an earthy palette because it fosters a calming environment. No bright colors please! I also prefer natural materials and finishes for the same reason. This should be a tactile environment that delights all the senses.

A Living Room Under Budget

A little bit modern, a little bit eclectic. That’s the vibe we are channeling in this fresh and airy little living room number. A palette of blues and neutrals gives the space a fresh and calming vibe, while the playful patterns in the rug and artwork keep it feeling contemporary. But there’s more to designing a living room than style. We’ll set the scene: You discover Modsy and are so excited to start your home design journey. Finally, a headache-free way to try before you buy – go ahead, cut the tags off! You sign up, take the Style Quiz, and answer all the fun questions about your dream living room. And then comes the question about budget… Oh futon.

Mom always said, there’s no such thing as a free lunch, or a free sofa, or a free sofa to eat your lunch on (but really, shouldn’t you be eating at the dining table?). And while saving for a new car or a beach vacation is probably somewhere on your to-do list, we are betting you didn’t budget a whole lot to furnish your living room.

We are just going to come out and say it: buying furniture is expensive. You can’t go around it, you can’t go over it, you have to go through it and pay the extra taxes + shipping + handling. So rather than turning “budget” into a dirty word, we think it’s important to educate our users, and everyone else looking to design their home, about what it really costs to furnish a living room.

Brace yourself: the average cost to furnish a living room from the scratch is around $10,000+. If this is giving you major sticker shock, don’t worry you are not alone! It’s not our fault we’ve been lied to by all the beautiful pins and DIY trickery. You know those photos of gorgeous living rooms inside the glossy pages of Architectural Digest or Elle Decor that make your eyeballs drool? We all want our homes to look like that, but we don’t want to spend our kids’ college tuition to get there (yes, these spaces cost around $100k and that is not including the million dollar art collection!)

2f

So what’s a budget-savvy, smart, good design seeking homeowner to do? Before you begin to panic and cancel your Netflix account and vow to only eat soup for a year to save for your #livingroomgoals, we’ve worked some Modsy Magic and created a lovely living room with a price tag of only $6,000.

**You might be thinking, “Six thousand dollars still sounds like a LOT of moolah…” and yes while it is definitely a solid four figures, allow me to explain how we got to that number. Do a quick Google search on “living room budget” and you will find most interior designers calling out 10 big ones as the average “middle tier” for a complete living room overhaul. A lot of other articles claim it’s possible to get the look for $1,000, but the fine print discloses lower quality furniture and impractical DIYs.

We think six thousand dollars is the Goldilocks of living room price tags. Not too hot not too cold, not too expensive and not too poor-quality. Aside from taking a peek at the collection we created, we also polled our stylists for some of their favorite budget-friendly saving styling tips. That’ll do piggy bank. That’ll do.

Greenhouse Garden Retreat

You can eat your greenery or you can sit on it. Both have equally curative powers according to Pantone, who named this particularly leafy shade its 2017 color of the year. A symbol of new beginnings, the zesty, yellow-green hue is all about reconnecting, refreshing, rejuvenating, restoring, and pretty much any other “re-word” you can think of.

pantone's greenery

But if this tangy green reminds you more of Kermit the Frog than a vegetable garden, you’re not alone. While not eagerly hoping on the greenery bandwagon ourselves, we tried embracing the color for its symbolic, rather than purely aesthetic value.

Amid our current tumultuous social and political climate, Pantone chose greenery as a means to encourage “green” ways of thinking and living. Pantone suggests that the shade can inspire us to reconnect with nature as we disconnect with technology and promote green ways of thinking in respect to such things as design, energy, and even diet for the coming year. Kale yeah!

At Modsy we know that our environments shape our experiences, so we are taking a stab at incorporating some greenery into our domain. So if you can’t swing a spur-of-the-moment vacation to Airbnb’s Outside In London loft, we invite you to relax and photosynthesize inside our greenhouse garden retreat.

A Petrie-Perfect Living Room

Cropping up in practically every living room pin and many a home tour photo essay, we are seeing Crate & Barrel’s Petrie sofa everywhere. Why? The Petrie’s Mid-Century Modern form, updated with a transitional edge, makes it utterly versatile and it is the perfect combo of comfort and style. It’s available in a plethora of sizes, shapes, and colors, making each Petrie sofa a unique bundle of joy that is suited to fit any interior.

We took our Petrie sofa out for a spin in three different spaces with three very different styles, and – spoiler alert – it looked equally amazing in each. So if your style is transitional, industrial, or eclectically modern, we’ve got a look to make your space Petrie-perfect.

mod-enthusiast

For our first space, we wanted to start with a basic transitional living room. And while such a style might easily feel boring or “vanilla,” we think the addition of the Petrie sofa transforms it into the best, slow-churned, locally raised vanilla ice cream we’ve ever had. We opted for the corner sectional version of our Petrie sofa to maximize seating and style. With this as our base, we layered in additional furniture with a Mid-Century edge. Keeping a neutral color palette with a few pops of color helps the space feel fresh. We love this look for anyone who gravitates towards a Mid-Century Modern vibe, but wants to live in a space that feels more contemporary and inviting.

And on the other end of the spectrum, we’ve got the silky smooth dark chocolate gelato version of the same sofa. Here’s a space that will satisfy the cravings for raw materials and hard lines of our industrial enthusiasts (sorry, ice cream not included). An aesthetic that can feel a bit cold, here our Petrie sofa makes industrial look comfortable (you really CAN have it all!). We chose a dark charcoal fabric to compliment the moody grey-scale palette of our industrial interior. The industrial look is all about raw materiality, so we suggest selecting pieces with lots of metal, unfinished or reclaimed wood, and aged leather.

Plopped inside this sweet little living space is the final iteration of our Petrie sofa. A golden yellow hue reminiscent of bold Mid-Century interiors, this version of the Petrie is “seated” inside an eclectic living room. This space is comprised of a mix of materials, colors, and styles, which mesh together and create a playful and invigorated living room. The consistent color palette of yellows and blues here keeps the space feeling cohesive, while the intentional combination of Mid-Century forms – such as the Petrie sofa, the tripod lamp, or the Beverly Hills Hotel artwork (to name a few) – give our living room an air of design sophistication.

Industrial Chic Living Space

industrial chic living roomEven on an overcast, wintery day you still have a fabulous view of the city from international intelligence agent, Jane Bond’s penthouse. A luxe array of materials, iconic furniture, and every shade of black and white harmonize inside this industrial chic living room, where we got a chance to sit down and chat with the fierce female, herself.

Modsy: Last time we saw you, you were hopping on a plane to Paris. What’s changed since then?

Jane Bond: Wow time flies! It feels like nothing and everything all at once. My French has improved immensely and I’ve finally finished designing this space.

industrial chic living room

Modsy: Your style has been described as a “feminine” take on a masculine aesthetic. Do you see it that way?

Jane Bond: I love industrial spaces, but I also crave things that sparkle. The industrial look is definitely one that gets attributed to a more “masculine” or rugged style, but I like to think I’m taking ownership and making it into something new that can be both soft and hard, masculine and feminine. Us ladies like concrete and leather, too!

Modsy: Can you give us a little insight into the design and styling of this room, in particular?

Jane Bond: I’ve been chasing this idea of the optimal entertaining environment. I love hosting gatherings, so I wanted to curate a space that catered to that need. The room is large, and I’ve filled it with lots of seating to create gathering spaces and little nooks for more intimate conversations. The overall look is a sort of glamorous take on the industrial aesthetic that you previously mentioned. I love re-articulating those two styles, which most people might see as opposites, and creating a space where they harmonize in this new, unexpected way.

industrial chic living room

industrial chic living room

Modsy: Can you give us an example?

Jane Bond: Animal print. When you think cheetah spots or zebra stripes, they’re not usually associated with concrete or metal. In this space, I strive to combine those two opposites in a way that feels unexpectedly familiar. Take this rug for example or that tessellated zebra artwork. They are both pieces that might easily get labeled as very glamorous or “girly,” but here they add this texture and subtle feminine statement to the space. That’s what I absolutely love, the subdued drama.

*Jane here is referencing her Calm Leopard rug (Horchow) and her Zebraba Tile artwork (Minted).

industrial chic living room

Modsy: How have your many travels played a role in shaping your design aesthetic?

Jane Bond: While I’m not really one to bring home souvenirs (and let’s face it, I don’t often have time for sightseeing), traveling to so many places has given me a crash course in design and iconic pieces of furniture. I love seeing the ways culture and personality are communicated through interiors, and I think that idea is really present in my home.

Modsy: What is your favorite piece you own and why?

Jane Bond: Oh wow… That’s so hard to say, but right now I’m really loving my Animal Study print from Natural Curiosities. It’s just another beautiful example of this idea of taking a familiar form and translating it into something unexpected. And the orange brings just a touch of warmth to this otherwise very cool space.

industrial chic living room

Modsy: Is there anything exciting that you are working on at the moment that you can tell us about?

Jane Bond: Laughs. You know I can’t give any details, but let’s just say I need to renew my passport.

Inspired by Jane’s home, we’ve created a collection that encapsulates her industrial chic aesthetic. Shop all the products in this collection below, or see it in your space with Modsy

A Spanish Colonial Revival Home Tour: The Granada Collection

space_2098_design_1_000_modcam_001_test_000-vraydenoiser-copy

Freshly back from a trip to Granada, the tranquil city in southern Spain, we found ourselves struck by a case of the “post-vacation blues.” Rather than toting home souvenir keychains or t-shirts to remind us of our travels, we decided to bring our vacation home with us in the form of interior inspiration.

When you step inside this Spanish Colonial revival bungalow, you will find a warm and inviting living space comprised of whitewashed walls, natural woods, neutral fabrics, pops of bold color, and Moorish touches. Our vision came from the rich heritage of Islamic influence in Andalucia region of Spain, especially evident in Granada’s magnificent “palace-city” Alhambra.

space_2098_design_1_000_modcam_004_v02-copy

As such, this is an interior heavily inspired by architecture, particularly that of the Alhambra’s Salön de Comares with its splendidly delicate marquetry ceiling. Comprised of over eight thousand individual pieces of cedarwood, the ceiling is an architectural and artistic marvel.

space_2098_design_1_000_modcam_003_v02-copy

To incorporate this aesthetic into our bungalow, we started with a neutral base of hearty and inviting furniture. We then layered in accessories and accents with a distinctly Alhambra-esque aesthetic. Geometry is the star of the show. Look for pieces with lots of pattern, intricately carved wood, and tesselated mosaic tiles. Natural materials should abound: opt for wood, marble, linen, wool, and gold to keep the environment feeling organic. And, finally, choose accessories with vibrant colors that skew towards the primaries to keep the space feeling warm and invigorated.

A collection designed especially for Modsy’s Contemporary Collectors, Rustic Travelers, and Traditional Collectors, we love the idea of bringing your trip home with you in the form of some interior inspiration. Not sure what your Modsy style is? Take our Style Quiz to find out.

The Mood of Monet: Bringing Pastels Indoors

space_2139_design_01_modcam_04_005-copy
Our big takeaway from this season’s runway collections was color. More subdued than sweet, a palette of moody pastels dominated the 2017 Pre-Fall collections of designers such as Valentino and Bottega Veneta.

A different take on hues usually reserved for baby showers and easter egg baskets, we found these stormier pastels reminiscent of colors employed by French Impressionist, Monet in his Water Lilies oil painting series.

monet-3

Left: Pre-Fall 2017 Valentino, photo by Gerardo Somoza/Indigital.tv. Right: Monet, Le Bassin Aux Nymphéas, 1919

We translated this aesthetic from the runways to a modern living room. Using the same palette enhanced with luxurious materials such as velvet, burl wood, and mother of pearl, this living room captures the same moody vibe as the runway collections.
